Asar 15, a traditional Gorkhae festival celebrated around Darjeeling, Sikkim, Kalimpong , Terai Doars , North-East India and in Nepal etc. dedicated to paddy sowing, consumption of Dahi (yogurt) and Chiwra (beaten rice), is a significant cultural event that combines agricultural activities, traditional games, and community bonding. This year’s celebration of asar 15 took place at Jhepi village, Darjeeling by feelAthrill(Adventure Company) in collaboration with Yatri Homestay, Jhepi and included activities such as paddy sowing, tug of war and mud bath activities.
The Journey from Singmari, Darjeeling to Jhepi Village
The event commenced at Singmari, Darjeeling, Feelathrill leaders and our participants gathered in the early morning, excited and ready to embark on a journey that symbolizes unity and celebration of our cultural heritage. The route from Singmari to Jhepi village was adorned with scenic beauty, lush green landscapes via tukvar tea estate, Bijanbari and Kaijalay bazar, the aroma of fresh earth, setting a perfect backdrop for the festivities.
Arrival at Jhepi, Bijanbari
Upon arrival at Yatri Homestay in Jhepi village, participants were greeted with traditional music and dances, many of the renowned YouTubers and social media influencers were also invited for the celebration of asar ko 15, the homestay, known for its picturesque setting and warm hospitality, served as the ideal venue for the day’s activities. Breakfast was served as everyone from our team and our dear participants were starving as we had started the journey in the early hours after the warm and filling breakfast we went on to the fields where the the locals had meticulously prepared the venue, ensuring that the essence of Asar 15 was captured in every detail.
Paddy Sowing
The main event of Asar 15 began with the traditional paddy sowing activity. Participants, including both locals and visitors, took part in this age-old practice. Guided by experienced farmers, they learned the techniques of sowing paddy, an essential skill in traditional agriculture. This activity not only highlighted the importance of agriculture in Nepali culture but also provided an opportunity for everyone to connect with the land and its produce.
Tug of War
Following the paddy harvesting, the atmosphere shifted to one of the competitions and camaraderie with a traditional tug of war. Teams were formed, and the game began with much enthusiasm and cheering from the spectators. The tug of war, a symbol of strength and teamwork, brought everyone together in a spirited contest. The event showcased the physical prowess and the unyielding spirit of the participants, fostering a sense of unity and community.
Mud Bath Activities
The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the mud bath activities. Participants jumped into the prepared mud fields where paddy was to be sown, engaging in playful and competitive games. The mud bath, apart from being a fun activity, holds cultural significance as it is believed to be a ritual of purification and connection with nature. Laughter and joy filled the air as people of all ages splashed and played in the mud, creating unforgettable memories.
Dahi and Chiwra Feast
No Asar 15 celebration is complete without the traditional feast of Dahi and Chiwra. After the engaging activities, everyone gathered to enjoy a meal featuring these staple items. The combination of creamy yogurt and crispy beaten rice, often accompanied by seasonal fruits and sugar, was relished by all. This simple yet delicious meal is a reminder of the agrarian roots and the wholesome lifestyle of the Nepali people and their culture.
Conclusion
Asar 15 with feelathrill in collaboration with Yatri Homestay in Jhepi village was a resounding success, bringing together people from different walks of life to celebrate Gorkhae culture and traditions. The event was a perfect blend of agricultural activities, traditional games, and communal feasting, reflecting the richness and diversity of its heritage. Most importantly it taught everyone of us the value of Food (Anna) by seeing and experiencing the hardships and efforts to cultivate the Rice ( Paddy sowing) .The journey from Singmari, Darjeeling to Jhepi village and the festivities at Yatri Homestay not only strengthened the community bonds but also provided an immersive experience of Nepali traditions for all participants.
